Vanessa Tackman Go Tell it on the Mountain

This book is very religious and about families of a different race. It isn't about racism though. It's about how their family is together but not at all connected. They all have different pasts and some are kept secret. I would recomend this book if you like fiction books about real life things.

This book is somewhat difficult to understand so you may have to read some pages over again. It is about a family, and each person has a secret of their own. This is an outstanding book because it gives you every detail about who the character is and why the way they are. Florence acts the way she acts because she doesn't like her brother and she never did. Their mother treated him unfairly, he always got the better of things even though he was whipped alot and got in more trouble. Gabriel is the brother and i think he is not a very good man. He had to care for his mother because Florence left. He was very sinful, and he says he's a man of god and just asks forgiveness everytime he did something wrong.

The symbols in this book are the letters wrote from Debora to Florence, the bible, tears, the box filled with money and alchohol. The letters are a symbol because they represent the truth of the past that Gabriels wife, Elizabeth, didn't know about. It contained information about his former wife complaining that she knew that Gabriel had an affair with another girl and has a son living somewhere else. She knew this because a wife knows this, and her box filled with money she was saving up was gone. So he must have given that money to the girl so she could leave.

The bible represents all the songs they sang in church. Talking about rising up and not falling down. It represents Elisha, the young boy who spoke and sang about the lord. The bible represents honesty of the good people in the church, some may have been saved.

Tears symbolize every character in this book. Florence and Gabriel cried when they found out their mother had died. Roy, Gabriels son cried when he was stabbed. Esther cried when she found out she was pregnant with Gabriels child when he was married to Deborah! Elizabeth cries when her boyfriend Richard goes to jail and then when he passes away. Then everyone cries when John is saved at the church.

The box filled with money symbolizes the honest relationship Gabriel and Deborah have. When Gabriel steals the money and gives it to Esther then the honesty is gone. Deborah knows now that she could not trust her husband. If he were to take that money and not tell her about it then there must have been something serious going on. And there was!

Alchohol represents Royal, Gabriel and Esther. Gabriel drank and then commited adultery, that is a sin, so after he sinned he would always ask God for forgiveness but he would keep doing bad things and then praying right after. Esther was drinking when she and Gabriel were together and Gabriel cheated on his wife. Then once Esther moved away their son, Royal was born. Not too long after Esther passed away and Royal moved back to live with his grandparents. So Gabriel kept an eye on him and when Royal was sixteen, Gabriel didn't want him going off to the war. So that is also when Deborah started suspecting things. After the war Gabriel and Royal met again and Royal had been drinking. Alchohol symbolizes the badness of their lives. Royal passed away later.
This book is very interesting and it makes you think how horrible some people can be. I think you would enjoy reading this even though it is a little hard to understand. Once you start reading it, you can't stop.
